But I also wanna take a minute to give a quick review of Eminems new album...
This is all based on my 5th listen of each individual track. So it had time to really soak in on my opinions
1.Cold Wind Blows - 8.6
Scathing intro track, solid production, great hook, basically Em getting back to business. I would have enjoyed a proper intro though...Em is kinda known for his entertaining skits and I like skits...they make albums feel like albums. But its very clear this whole cd is an attempt to change the old and bring in the new...
2.Talkin To Myself ft.Kobe - 9.0
The good old marshall mathers-esque guitar riffs start the beat off right...the snares share too much of a resemblance to the previous song but is necessary cuz the beat is pretty busy. On this track em showcases his true emotions...very honest, admitting he almost dissed lil wayne and kanye west and than believes if he did (since proof wasn't around to stop him) that he would have "gotten his ass handed to him" LOL c'mon Slim Shady thats being kind of modest buddy. Alot of people tend to agree that he was kind of being too nice with that line lol...but remember, this is the album representing the "new" Marshall Mathers.
3.On Fire - 10
Wow, I don't know how to explain how much this song kicks ass. The beat slaps, the rhymes are put together neatly as Eminem once again slaps rappers around with his creative and vivid imagination. Sounds as if the same spirit from the Slim Shady LP and Marshall Mathers LP time-traveled into the future and recorded this shit through eminems physical body. Crazy
4.Won't Back Down ft.Pink - 10
I liked this song from the first time I heard it, honestly. Hardcore rock/rap beat. Good bounce, Pink kills the chorus. The song is basically a continuation of "On Fire" where Eminem attempts to reclaim his crown as the hardest white boy in the game and succeeds exceptionally well.
5.W.T.P (White Trash Party) - 7.6
When the beat started, the first time listening I was like what the fuck is this? But after the lyrics depicted a story about trailer trash whores and trash bags and broken down cars full of junk worthy of being showcased on "Hoarders", it becomes apparent the whole song is Eminem just having fun again. The instrumental has a club feel, but the humor of the whole content kind of subtracts from the oddness of him using it and sounds like it would make for a hilarious video. This sounds like it would have been the first single for the album if Eminem followed his regular routine for single release.
6.Going Through Changes - 9.2
He starts off the song giving a minute shoutout to Philly through a metaphor so I just had to point that out first, lol. But the beat/sample is reminiscent of "Beautiful" on the Relapse album. Very heartfelt lyrics...also reminds me of "Deja Vu" from his previous release, which is good in my mind since those were my two fav tracks from the album. Eminem admitting how he had easy access to drugs and used it to his advantage to run away from the death of his friend and such...contemplative lyrics. Good song overall. So far ive noticed alot of guitar in the albums production...maybe Em's trying to appeal a bit more to his rock audience more so than Relapse did.
7.Not Afraid - 8.8
This song didn't grow on me, so basically i had a certain amount of likening to it since the first listen. The production is a little plain but theres not really much else you can add to those already syrup-heavy violin-strings...thats from a producers perspective. The lyrics embody the Recovery album, its a clear demonstration of the progress he is making mentally. Trying to battle old demons and showcasing his yearning to know other people are feeling the same battle. I must point out that his flow has improved from Relapse, and that's saying alot considering Relapse was extremely lyrically on point.
8.Seduction - 7.2
Ok, so the auto-tune vocals threw me off in the beginning, very bassy beat, has a dark under-tone...the drums and the snares have echo. The ed lover line was lmao material LOL...so the song is basically Eminem getting his swag on. Its ok, weakest track on the album thus far though. The sound is proper, the rhymes are right, im just not crazy about the content. I also like how he bites Jay-Z's adlib "ahh..." in the 2nd verse, this is on the WTP tip. The song is hot, its just not as dope as the other cuts. I could def. bump this in the ride.
9.No Love ft.Lil Wayne - 9.6
At first I didn't like this song, im not a big wayne fan. But his verse grew on me, Eminems verse always was crazy to me. It mirrors the "Forever" and "Drop The World" kind of intensity. Also, I grew up on freestyle music so the fact that Just Blaze fuckin haddaway like this is remarkable lol. See that makes me respect Just Blaze even more...this song eventually became one of my favs on the album. Good chorus break down...should be a summer smash single.
10.Space Bound - 10
Instantly my faviorate song on the cd. The instrumental has a midwestern, spaced out, chilled out kinda rock-rap vibe...the emotion is very real, the build up before the chorus...the Chorus is amazing. Sends chills up my spine...the singer is apparently unlisted but sounds like it could very well be a mix of male and female vocalists. Excellent song depicting the thoughts that go through someones mind when they find they're confidence and surf back out into the the big "ocean" to find that "fish". Excellet song right here...prob. wont be a single but will always be enjoyed as a classic Eminem song.
11.Cinderlla Man - 10
Excellence. The beat alone should make your neck partially snap. Very interesting concept and title. The R&B vocals during the breaks and chorus are great as well. This is Eminem once again demonstrating his return to the passion of his music. Multi-syllables and crazy rapid-fire flows. Couple 1-syllables here and there but his voice sounds great (no homo) he's finally done with the retarded arabic accents (which didnt bug me that much, but could have done without them).
12.25 To Life - 9.5
This has a similar feel as "going through changes" mood wise. Melancholy to the fullest. At first you think its another song about Kim (which would be kind of cool considering he hasnt touched that subject since Encore) but this song is Eminem in his pure brilliance. He doesn't faintly hint to you what exactly he's talking about until the end of the song...i won't give too much about it but ill tell you that when it hit me i was impressed. Its a bittersweet love song about something/someone that means alot to him.
13.So Bad - 10
Wow since when did 3rd quarters become the highlight of the albums now a days? Very solid lineup so far. Finally Em and Dre back at it again...this was my fav. cut for the first 2 listens until Space Bound took over. The beat is a vintage Dre production, those sick Dre horns, the pumping bass kicks, the clean snares, the piano arrangement...lovely. I would have loved more dre production on the album (especially like this). This is like "One More Time" or "Crack A Bottle" on steroids time x900. The chemistry is still there for sure.
14.Almost Famous - 9.0
I really had to let this one grow on me, at first it always just reminded me of "Underground" on Relapse, like a continuation of the song. Did you want some "Eminem Show" shit? Well here ya go. The last 2 songs sound like that, exactly in many ways. It has that "curtains opening" crazy circus show shit kinda vibe. Some hard rhymes over some hardcore instrumentation. Content wise its pretty much about Fame and him regaining his spot back.
15.Love The Way You Lie ft.Rihanna - 9.0
Yeah i thought the same thing *wtf? an album ago you said "I pee on rihanna man i do what i wanna" and now your making a song with her?* Remember - This is the "new" evolved Eminem. The grown man (which not all songs indicate). But the production is great, it has that continued theme the whole album mostly contains which is heavy drums and lots of acoustic guitar riffs. Rihanna actually does a great job with the chorus, the song content fits her recent troubles as well. Which is the ups and downs of relationships and abusive situations. Def some radio shit...sonically it reminds me of "BOB - Airplanes".
16.Your Never Over - 10
At first I thought this song was mad corny...the chorus especially. But after listening to it for the 5th time I appreciate everything about it. The little synths that move from left to right panned (listen to it with headphones). The beat is great honestly, this is the most emotional song on the album. If you really pay attention to his lyrics and picture a younger man who had a strong bond with someone when he was at his lowest in life...you can't help but feel his emotion for this guy. Its refreshing to hear Eminem talk about it too, you can tell he's finally fighting his demons and to end the album with a tribute to his best friend, very humble and honest.
17.*BONUS* - Untitled - 9.4
Havoc produced madness. Basically the same thing Em did on Relapse...all of a sudden this chaotic song comes out of no where and bashes you in the face. Not too much else to say about this besides a crazy beat thats def. Eminems lane and his crazy mind going at every angle dissing Elton for the 3rd time in the album lol. And some flows that would make a Tech n9ne's mouth water (no homo, again).
Overall - 8.8
Id give it 4 stars and a quarter, its not quite 4 and a half and not 5 stars. But this is Eminem's best music since The Eminem Show. You really need to give it a few listens to truly appreciate his new sound and direction...at first I would have disregarded it as a mediocre attempt of a come back...but just because he's not Slim Shady anymore doesn't mean he fell off. He just evolved. And for an artist of Eminems caliber to evolve in this day and time...thats worth admiring.
