Generation Y is my generation.
We are 16 to 27 years old (according to Stephanie Armour, USA TODAY)
We are 70 million strong and growing fast still.
We grew up with technology advancing.
We also have grown comfortable around it.
The previous generation often looks to US for guidance on how to use it.
There are many different ideologies on what we are, why we are here, what the purpose is and isn't. But what remains clear, is that we all share alot in common. We have strong minds, we believe what we choose to, we dissect things to a science whenever we really want to analyze it, and we see people through the eyes of our own soul.
That's just my 2 cents though...and this song also touches the hypocrisy of certain people...for example...if a child born innocent is surrounded by war and learns nothing else of life...are you supposed to expect that child to grow up mimicking love and peace? No, probably not, that's not how it works. lol
I just like to see it from several perspectives...who do you really blame? The angry child or the transparent parents?
I start the song off with a little peak into my early days of entering society (catholic school, abusive teachers). If you weren't there in my life at the time, you don't remember what i've seen. If you do, than you will know exactly where I take you with those lyrics.
It than breaks into the common perceptions and deceptions of my generation. Hence "And I could be your example of what my generation is". "I" referring to the ideals being spoken beforehand.
Than I use a personal experience to capitalize on the subject...of a childhood friend who ended up in jail and how it was seen coming from miles away. Than I use the Virginia Tech situation to explain my theory that "Victims can become the biggest criminals". And this can be a victim of much darkness...being abused, raped, lied to, manipulated, neglected, emotionally and physically hurt...these people without the proper treatment (LOVE) have the tendency to become the biggest culprit in society.
Maybe adults like to have their work cut in half. And then blame musicians and television for the problems...like ok...you are the one allowing your child to sit in front of a box and watch corporate controlled advertisements that are not even subliminal enough to hide the fact that they use perversions to sell their products...like sex, violence, over-consumption and over-spending, fast food, etc... You see it, don't pretend its not there. And don't blame the government and expect them to watch your children. I have had this conversation with numerous adults and some see it differently, some could care less, its just part of conversing. Im not right, or wrong, I just "try" to give what I believe is a "positive" alternative to something that (to me) seems "negative"
That's kind of all I really wanted to get through with the song. Embody the typical kid in my generation or young adult (16-27) and ask the one's with the issues what their problems are..and 75% of the time they will tell you something based on legal issues, babydaddy / babymama drama, problems holding onto a job, family issues and things of that nature. And than pay close attention to the kind of music that sells (Eminem for example)...its the high heads showing us a mirror of what we are becomming. Not saying Eminem has bad music, in my opinion he is one of the most talented writers in history let alone "rapper". But his music sold because it connected with every person that had the same issues...and that there should sum up why he sold 50 million cds. Because that means 50 million people are in the same fucked up boat.
And those 50 million people are the majority of my generation. The young adults who have children and still don't understand what responsibility is. The young adults who can't maintain a job because to them its of no interest and they can't even pay attention to anything unless its something they have passion towards. The druggies, the drinkers, the druggie-drinkers...the sex addicts, fast food addicts...its about those people involved in my age group. And in one way or another, none of us have a clean sheet. Is it not of our nature as humans to experiment with what we think makes us happy? Without making mistakes you never learn what is right and wrong.
Also in the song contain the following lyrics and their description as listed below:
Reading people stories = Telling white lies
Making up alternate perception of your lifestyle so people think of you how you want them to.
Thinking you are evil because of how you feel...but realizing you are still connected to the prime creator (God) and its always possible to return to the light. Weather its Jesus Christ, Buddha, Allah, whatever the name or image in your head is...it all represents harmony with the acceptance of all that is and harmony with the love of yourself and everything around you. After all, it seems like (me included) many people spend alot of their life chasing dreams...these dreams of lifestyles we wish to have...this ultimate climax of achievement where we can stand tall on the top of that mountain and proclaim victory...some of us do...some of us don't...and some of us never realize that we already won.
